Lucknow, Apr 14 : A cash reward of Rs 15000 has been announced by the additional director general of police (railways) for anyone who gives information on assailants who pushed athlete Arunima alias Sonu Sinha off a moviing train resulting in her losing a leg.
ADG Police (Railways) A K Jain made this announcement here today.
In Delhi, the Railway Board chairman Vivek Sahay said, Railways would provide all possible medical treatment to Arunima. He said, the matter is being investigated and the culprits would be arrested soon.
Sahay said, the Prime Minister's Office has sought a report on the entire incident and the Railway Minsityer Mamata Banerjee, presently busy in West Bengal Assembly polls, has expressed serious concern.
Sources said, the stretch between Shahjahanpur and Barielly (roughly upto 80 km) remains unmanned. This is the same track where the incident took place.
In Bareilly, where Arunima is undergoing treatment, her sister Lakshmi appealed to the Uttar Pradesh government to ensure the security of women travelling in trains.
"I want to appeal to the state government to ensure the security of women traveling in trains so that such tragic incidents do not happen again with anyone," Arunima's sister Lakshmi said.
According to Lakshmi, Arunima's condition was stable, though she had fever.
"Doctors have asked us to wait for two days after which Arunima might undergo surgery, if needed," she said.
The 23-year-old national level volleyball player lost her leg after she was pushed out of the Padmavat Express in Bareilly on April 11 by three men who were trying to rob her.
The incident took place between Chenati and Bareilly railway stations when the sportswoman was traveling to Gautam Buddha Nagar (Noida) to appear in a CISF recruitment examination.
A case under section 307 (attempt to murder) and 393 (attempt to robbery) of the IPC has been registered against unidentified persons by the Government Railway Police.
In the FIR, Arunima stated that three to four youths were fighting in the train and one of them fell on her, Bareilly GRP incharge Anees Ahmad had said.
Lakshmi said a RPF official visited her in the hospital at about 2.30 am and gave her Rs five thousand for thetreatment. He told her that a probe was on into the incident.
"Till now the treatment is almost free. We have to spend a nominal amount," she added.
Meanwhile, terming the incident as tragic, opposition parties including Congress, BJP and Samajwadi Party here said it exposed tall claims of the BSP about good law and order in the state.
These parties have demanded a thorough inquiry into the matter and immediate arrest of all the accused. PTI
