New Delhi, Aug 13: Janta Dal United today attacked the Centre over Delhi police putting conditions for Anna Hazare's proposed indefinite fast from August 16 terming the move “unconstitutional” and “harmful for democracy.”
“The government putting conditions over Hazare's fast is unconstitutional. This is not good for democracy of the country and will be harmful to it,” party President Sharad Yadav told PTI.
He said it was not right to put conditions like the number of people attending the programme in case of democratic agitations.
Yadav also dismissed Home Minister P Chidambaram's statement yesterday that there was no question of the governmnet tackling Hazare's fast plan as the matter rested with Delhi Police Commissioner saying, “Whom does he want to befool. If Delhi police are putting conditions on their own, the government should interfere to set things right.” The JD-U President said, “The question is how can you put brakes on on a democratic agitation.”
Yadav's remarks came on a day when Hazare has written a letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh accusing the government of “crushing” the fundamental rights of people.
Noting that he was not given permission to hold fast at the venues sought by him, without any proper reason assigned, Hazare questioned, “Whether all this does not give the impression of dictatorship?”
The Anna team said it has been asked by Delhi Police to give an undertaking that it will end its protest fast at a park in central Delhi in two-and-half days, a condition which it said was not acceptable and “totally unconstitutional”. PTI
