Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan tested negative for COVID-19 on Wednesday. He had agreed for the test after Faisal Edhi, who met him last week tested positive for the coronavirus. State Minister of Health of Pakistan took to his Twitter handle to inform about Khan's coronavirus test. His post read, "Prime Minister Imran Khan was tested today for SARS-CoV-2 (the virus strain that causes coronavirus disease 2019 [COVID-19]. I am happy to report that his test is negative."
Pakistan prime minister had undergone a test for the novel coronavirus, days after he met Faisal Edhi, the chairman of the Edhi foundation who was found positive for the infection recently. His samples were collected by a team of doctors from the Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital.
Advisor on Information Firdous Ashiq Awan said on Wednesday that the family of the Prime Minister had already tested negative.
Last week, Khan met Faisal Edhi, the son of late philanthropist Abdul Sattar Edhi and chairman of the Edhi Foundation, who had tested positive for COVID-19. He handed over a Rs 10 million cheque for the premier's coronavirus relief fund.
Faisal Edhi's son Saad earlier told the Dawn newspaper that his father started showing symptoms last week, soon after meeting Khan in Islamabad on April 15.
Meanwhile, the number of coronavirus cases rose to 10,072 on Wednesday while the COVID-19 death toll has reached to 209 after 17 more people have died in Pakistan, according to officials.
Pakistan's Punjab province has reported 4,331 cases, Sindh has 3,373, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa 1,345, Balochistan 495, Gilgit-Baltistan 283, Islamabad 194 and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir 51 patients. So far, 118,020 tests have been done nationwide, including 5,647 in the last 24 hours. A total of 2,156 patients have recovered.
