New Delhi: A large number of parents in the Maximum City have accepted to spanking and smacking their child.

A survey carried out by Bornsmart, a parenting organization found that 62 per cent of parents in Mumbai beat their kids, a shocking reflection of poor parenting habits.

A report in The Times of India suggests that the same survey when carried out in 2012 showed 69% of the respondents agreeing to spanking and smacking their children.

The survey covered 1,700 parents in Mumbai, revealed that a 61% of mothers hit their kids as compared to 29% of fathers. Among the mothers who admitted to hitting kids, only 9% were stay-at-home mothers as compared to 62% in the 2012 survey.

"Repeating parenting patterns of your parents plays a major role in spanking children. When you are beaten as a child, you tend to display the same behaviour," said Swati Popat Vats, an expert from Bornsmart team and the president of the Early Childhood Association.

Frustration, tiredness and unable to control the children were major factors cited by the parents why they hit their kids.

The survey also revealed that children between the age of two and eight years of age were spanked most often and those between the age of eight and ten years were threatened with discontinuing pocket money, or of being sent to boarding school.
