New Delhi: Only five percent of Indians are married to a person from a different caste, according to a survey.

The India Human Development Survey (IHDS), conducted by the National Council for Applied Economic Research (NCAER) and the University of Maryland, reports that around 30 per cent of rural and 20 per cent of urban households said they practised untouchability.

IHDS is the largest non-government, pan-Indian household survey.

The study covered over 42,000 households, representing different class and social groups. Just 5.4 per cent women aged 15-49 were married to inter-caste person. Same data was found in 2004-2005 study done by IHDS
