Ghaziabad: The district food supply department will ensure onions are sold at the rate of Rs 45 per kg at ration shops here, senior official said yesterday.

In a bid to control the sky-rocketing price of the vegetable, which is available in the open market for Rs 80 per kg, the official said 100 ration shops across the district will sell onions at a “cheap” rate of Rs 45 per kg starting yesterday.

“A Ration card holder can buy only one kg onion in a day.  Even as onion price has soared to 80 kg in open market, we would provide residents with onion for Rs 45 a kg,” district food supply officer Anil Kumar Dubey said.

The department has come forward in this regard after District Magistrate SVS Rang Rao asked officials to control price rise of onion in the district.

Food department official said they were buying onions from vegetable markets in wholesale, and selling it at 100 shops located in Vijaynagar, Kavinagar, Shastrinagar, Loni, among others.

The vegetable will be sold at ration shops from 8 AM to 4 PM every day.
