Mumbai rains: CM Shinde takes stock of heavy rainfall, over 3,500 people moved to safer places | Updates

The local train services, considered as the lifeline of Mumbai, were running normally on both the Central Railway and Western Railway routes, authorities said.

Mumbai rains: Torrential rains pounded the country's commercial capital Mumbai, coastal Konkan and other parts of Maharashtra since last night, inundating many towns, and villages in different areas, hitting road and rail traffic, and forcing evacuation of around 3,500 people to safer areas, officials said on Tuesday. Personally monitoring the situation, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has put all districts on high alert, visited the Disaster Management Centre and directed officials to make all arrangements including shifting of people living in vulnerable areas as the incessant rains continued. There have been no reports of any rain-related casualties so far from the state. The IMD has issued a Red Alert for Raigad, Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, Kolhapur, and Satara and Orange Alert for Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, Pune till Friday. Mumbai's chronic floor-prone areas of Sion, Wadala, Kings Circle, Bhandup, Parel, Kurla, and Nehru Nagar were inundated with knee-deep or waist-deep water, several subways were waterlogged, hampering east-west traffic movement and traffic crawled at a snail's pace on the two highways and on major roads. The Central Railway and Western Railway suburban trains as well as Mumbai Metro services were operating normally after overnight downpour, barring some delays.

    Car in Chief Minister's convoy meets accident, CM safe

    Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde went to the Disaster Control Room at BMC Head Quarter to take stock of situation as heavy rains lashed Mumbai.

    When he reached, the police car behind in his convoy was hit hard by another vehicle from behind, due to which both the vehicles were damaged.

    Although, there was no damage to CM or CM's vehicle.

    According to sources, the vehicle that hit police car in CM's convoy was in high speed and couldn't control. 

    The police is investigating the matter.

    Amid heavy rains, Powai Lake overflows

    Mumbai's Powai Lake began overflowing on Tuesday evening amid heavy rains for the past couple of days, a civic official said.

    The lake has a storage capacity of 545 crore litres and started overflowing at 6:15 pm, he added.

    "However, water from the lake is not potable and is used for industrial purposes. It had overflown on June 12 last year. When the lake is full, the water area is around 2.23 square kilometres, while the catchment area is 6.61 square kilometres," he said.

    Located some 27 kilometres from the BMC headquarters, Powai lake was built in 1890 at a cost of Rs 40 lakh.

    Part of road in Mumbai's Thane caves in

    A part of a road in Mumbra in Thane district caved in on Tuesday amid heavy rains, a civic official said. TMC RDMC chief Avinash Sawant said the incident took place in Samrat Ashok Nagar at around 6:30pm, adding there were no reports of injuries.

    CM Shinde talks to DMs of Raigad, Ratnagiri, other districts where IMD alert has been issued

    CM Eknath Shinde takes stock of situation

    Chief Minister Eknath Shinde spoke to authorities after heavy and continous rains lashed Konkan. 

    The chief minister has issued orders of immediate evacuation in Raigarh, Ratnagiri, Palghar, Thane, Kolhapur and other districts, as soon as a possible situation of floods emerges. 

    CM Shinde is also keeping a watch on the situation in Mumbai.
