Mumbai: Maharashtra government is moving forward to make Mumbai's nightlife more happening. On Monday, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis put a proposal before the state legislature to declare the non-residential areas and malls in city as ‘nightlife zones'.
The decision will allow any commercial establishment to be open throughout the night.
The legislation will take effect only after necessary amendments are made into the Bombay Shops and Establishment Act 1948. It will then have to be passed in both the Houses of the state.
Reportedly, the proposal was made by Uddhav Thackeray's son and Yuva Sena President Aaditya Thackeray. He had suggested in September 2013 that the BMC should permit a more flexible and happening nightlife in the financial capital.
Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) had already given its nod to the proposal last year. Mumbai police also gave a go ahead to the proposal that would permit bars, discos and pubs to be open all night.
Mumbai police commissioner Rakesh Maria said that tourism department had asked for the opinions a fortnight ago and it was cleared by the police. He said that police don't have any problem as long the order only covers non-residential area. Commissioner hopes that the 40,000 strong police force is capable of keeping the law and order of the city under control.
