A look at unreported rape cases in India

New Delhi: Diverse rape cases keep hogging the news time and again. Author Radha Kumar has described rape as the most common crime in India and UN human rights chief also stated that rape is the national problem of India.All such statements from international delegates are a concern for India. Latest data also reveal that India is getting weaker day by day in terms of security to its women.Rape cases in India have doubled between 1990 and 2008. According to the National Crime Records Bureau, 24,206 rape cases were reported in India in 2011.But there are so many rape cases which go unreported, there are families which don't let the girl file complaint of any sexual abuse or rape just for the sake of protecting the family's social reputation.Every Indian remembers Decemeber 16, 2012 , the day a 23-year-old woman named Damini was gang-raped on a bus in New Delhi as the whole nation came to protest on streets in order to demand justice for Damini but how many of us are aware when the nation was protesting for Damini a 15-year-old Dalit, or former “untouchable” girl was being held captive in Dharauli village in Sultanpur district of Uttar Pradesh, and was repeatedly raped by a group of upper-class perpetrators.While thousands of people gathered on the streets to revolt against those who raped and killed Damini, this little Dalit girl had no one to even report her case, let alone light a candle to support her.In another case a16-year-old girl in Sonepat, Haryana tried to take her life by setting herself on fire after being raped by her uncle.An 8-year-old girl was found floating in a lake in Bihar after being raped and killed.These are just four cases we have here mentioned about. The latest estimates suggest that a new case of rape is reported every 22 minutes in India and Ninety percent of the rape cases in go unreported. Of every 10 women raped in India, nine are afraid to speak up against their perpetrators.This estimate can make you guess how many girls suffer daily on the hands of rapists.Unreported rape cases in India are a growing concern. The worst part about it is that no one knows where to start.Young Dalit girls, who were once considered “untouchable” and “dirty”, are now raped on a daily basis. They make easy victims. No one really cares about them anyway.Data reveals that maximum rape attempts are done by members with in the family, close friends and knowns.Damini was lucky enough that she got the nation's support to demand justice for her but what about those girls whose heart breaking stories are yet to be reported in details.
