Know all about Apache and Chinook choppers that India is buying from US

New Delhi: Ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to the US, the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) yesterday cleared a multi-billion dollar deal for 22 Apache attack helicopters and 15 Chinook heavy-lift choppers with

CH-47F Chinook:

1- The Boeing CH-47 Chinook is an American twin-engine, twin rotor heavy-lift helicopter. It is primarily used in troop movement, artillery placement and battlefield resupply.

2- The original Chinook first flew in 1962 and has undergone several upgrades. It is now one of the most modern heavy lift choppers in the world.

3- The Chinook helicopters can carry upto 9.6 tons of cargo including heavy machinery, artillery guns and even light armoured vehicles to high altitudes.

4- Chinook helicopters won the contest with the upgraded Mi 26 chopper in October 2012. The commercial bid for the contract was revised 13 times before being cleared.

5- The total of 15 Chinook helicopters will be bought for almost $1.1 billion. The contract will have clauses to place follow-on orders for four more Chinooks.
