Jammu, Apr 20: The Jammu and Kashmir Government will felicitate the team of scientists and researchers who had cloned the world's first pashmina goat in the state.

The team of scientists headed by Dr Riaz Ahmad Shah of Sher-i-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology (SKUAST), Kashmir will be honoured and rewarded for their scientific achievement at a function here after the reopening of Civil Secretariat and other move offices in the summer capital, Governor N N Vohra and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah announced today.

The Governor and the Chief Minister were addressing the 22nd University Council meeting of the University at the Raj Bhavan, here yesterday.

The female clone named Noori, an Arabic word referring to light, has come as good news for fine fiber-producing pashmina goats, which are only spotted at an altitude of 14,000 feet in Ladakh, the coldest region of the state.

With Noori there is a hope that pashmina can be yielded in lower altitude like Kashmir valley.

The Governor observed that this achievement could pave way for establishing a centre of excellence in the university for undertaking similar initiatives in cloning other species of animals, like the Kashmir Hangul.
