Former Mumbai Police Commissioner Hassan Gafoor's alleged remarks accusing four senior police officers of dereliction of duty during the Mumbai attacks "do not fit into police discipline", Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan said on Monday.

"The remarks do not fit into police department's discipline," Chavan told reporters.

Asked if the government has ordered an inquiry into the alleged remarks, he said "we will see what can be done about it."

"The views could have been expressed by using other platform, instead of airing them through media," Chavan said.

Home Minister R R Patil has directed Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Chandra Iyengar to conduct an inquiry into the matter.  Gafoor, in an interview to a news magazine, had reportedly said "a section of senior police officers refused to be on the ground and take on the terrorists. By doing so, they chose to ignore the need of the hour."

Gafoor was Mumbai Police chief during the attacks in November last year which lasted for nearly 60 hours. PTI
