5.6-magnitude earthquake shakes Assam, West Bengal

New Delhi: A moderate intensity earthquake shook Assam and Siliguri, Jalpaiguri in West Bengal early in the morning today.The magnitude of the quake was measured 5.6 on the Richter scale, as per Indian Meteorological Department

New Delhi: A moderate intensity earthquake shook Assam and Siliguri, Jalpaiguri in West Bengal early in the morning today.

The magnitude of the quake was measured 5.6 on the Richter scale, as per Indian Meteorological Department (IMD).

IMD reported the epicentre at 23km north of Basugaon, 33km NE of Kokrajhar in Assam. The depth of the centre was 10 KM.

Several part of Bihar including Kishanganj, Katihar, Purnia nd Arariya also felt the shock. The tremor caused  panic in the region and people reportedly came out in the open.

The quake rattled doors and windows forcing people to rush out of their houses, police said. No loss of lives or property has been reported yet.

Just yesterday, a tremor of magnitude 3.0 was felt in Uttarakhand.

In April, deadly quakes had struck neighbouring nation Nepal which claimed over 8,000 lives. Parts of India including Bihar were also affected by the quake, costing several lives.
