Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Monday asked police to be more vigilant to ensure that honour killings do not take place in the national capital. "I do hope police will be more attentive," she said when asked about the suspected honour killing case in the city last night.
In a case of honour killing, a 19-year-old girl and her boyfriend were brutally tortured and electrocuted to death in Swaroop Nagar area of the city last week for wanting to marry against the wishes of her family.
A 26-year-old man and his wife were found dead under mysterious circumstances last night in north-west Delhi which is also suspected to be a case of honour killing as both of them were from different castes.
Asked about the Supreme Court issuing notices to the Centre and some states on growing incidents of honour killings, Dikshit said her government will give its response if its opinion has been sought on the issue.
"If the Supreme Court has asked for opinions of the states and if it includes us, then certainly we will give our opinion on the issue," she said.
The apex court has sought a response from the Centre and of Haryana, Punjab, UP, Rajasthan, Jharkhand, Bihar, Himachal Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh on a PIL filed by Shakti Vahini' an NGO expressing grave concern over recent spurt of such killings. PTI
