New Delhi: In a move to strengthen the security system in the national capital, the Delhi Police has decided to install eight thousand CCTV cameras in various parts of the city in the next two years.

Talking to reporters in New Delhi at a sideline of a function,

Deli Police Commissioner BS Bassi said that the project will cost 700 crore rupees and a proposal has been sent to the Home Ministry in this regard.

He said, once the sanction will be granted, the police will start installing cameras.

The move will help in keeping a watch on suspects besides strengthening security in the city, he said.

Last week, 67 CCTV cameras were installed in the Civil Lines area of the city under the ‘Neighbourhood Watch Scheme'. The resident's association named ‘Club Class' has installed 67 cameras spread in 16 clusters and covering over 2,000 households, a Delhi Police release said.

At present 3400 such cameras are operational at various places across the city.
