Delhi HC notice over not using donor's body for research

New Delhi: The Delhi High Court on Wednesday issued notice to the central and city government and AIIMS after a man said the last wish of his sister to donate her body for research could

'Consequently, late Sushila Gupta's body could not be utilised for research by the ORSO. In order to ensure this doesn't happen to other donors, her brother wrote a letter to us,' said the bench.

Gupta asked the court to direct the central and city governments to implement the scheme of donating bodies and its parts posthumously in public interest.

The ORBO was set up in AIIMS with a purpose of encouraging organ donation, fair and equitable distribution and optimum utilisation of organs.

The ORBO's activities include facilitation of cadaver transplantation whereby organs and tissues are retrieved from brain dead people and transplanted to needy patients.

It also facilitates the transfer of whole bodies to the AIIMS anatomy department which are then used for the purpose of education, training and research.
