    70-year-old man shot dead by grandson in UP's Meerut

    A 70-year-old man was shot dead by his grandson in a village here on Friday, police said.

    The incident happened in an area under Mawana police station of the district. Accused Tarun has been arrested, they said.

    24 fatal casualties of soldiers in 2020 due to ceasefire violations: Govt tells Parliament

    There were 24 "fatal casualties of soldiers" in 2020 due to ceasefire violations from the Pakistan side, the government informed the Parliament on Friday.

    Minister of State for Defence Ajay Bhatt said this in response to a query in the Lok Sabha. Ever since the Director General of Military Operations understanding came into existence in February 2021, there have been "just three incidents of ceasefire violations and no incident of shelling along the Line of Control". However, our troops remain prepared for all such eventualities, he said.

    Ex-IPS officer pressured Dalit man to file harassment FIR against Congress MLA, officials: police

    Two weeks after an FIR was lodged against Congress MLA Gopal Meena and five police officers for harassing a Dalit man here, officials Friday dismissed the allegations as “false” and “baseless”.

    Preliminary investigation suggested that the the FIR was registered at the behest of a ex-IPS officer Navdeep Singh to mount pressure on police to close a case registered against him in a land-related dispute, Rajasthan Police said in a statement issued here. Meena allegedly forced the Dalit man to lick his shoe and an officer urinated on him, while other police officers beat him up, according to the complaint registered on July 27.

    Wanted criminal held from Ludhiana in joint operation by Punjab, UP police

    A wanted criminal was arrested from Ludhiana in a joint operation by the Punjab Police and the Uttar Pradesh police's Special Task Force, Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav said here on Friday.

    Arvind Kashyap alias Pintu, a close associate of mafia-don Dhruv Kuntu, was allegedly involved in the 2013 murder of former Sagri MLA Sarvesh Sipu and the Uttar Pradesh Police had declared a reward of Rs 1 lakh on his arrest, the police chief said. Sipu was shot dead in broad daylight allegedly by the members of Pintu's criminal gang at the behest of Dhruv Singh Kuntu, he said.

    Sri Lankan national flees country, arrives in India

    A 54-year-old man, a Sri Lankan Tamil, arrived here using illegal boat service from the island nation, police said here on Friday.

    A resident of Colombo, he alighted from the illegal boat at the shoreline close to Dhanushkodi near here on Thursday evening and he was brought to the Mandapam Marine Police Station for enquiry and to initiate appropriate further steps, they added.

    Purpose of 3 new bills not punishment but justice: Amit Shah

    The purpose of the three new bills that seek to replace the Indian Penal Code (1860), Criminal Procedure Code (1898) and Indian Evidence Act is not to punish but to give justice, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said on Friday. He said the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita Bill, 2023; Bhartiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita Bill, 2023 and Bharatiya Sakshya Bill, 2023 will protect all the rights of citizens given by the Constitution.

    "The three outgoing laws were made to strengthen and protect the British rule and their purpose was to punish, not to give justice. The three new laws made with Indian thought process will bring a huge change in our criminal justice system. The Modi government has brought these laws taking a very principled decision to bring citizens at the centre instead of governance," he said.

    Maharashtra: 12 cops injured in stone pelting on highway in Dhule district

    Twelve policemen were injured in stone pelting, following a scuffle between two groups on a highway in Maharashtra's Dhule district, police said on Friday.

    The incident took place on Mumbai-Agra Highway (NH-3) at Sangvi village in Shirpur taluka around 9.30 pm on Thursday, an official said. A scuffle broke out between two groups, following which people staged a "raasta roko" blocking the movement of vehicles on the highway, he said.

    Four convicted for gang rape, murder of Dalit sisters in in UP's Lakhimpur Kheri

    Almost a year after two minor Dalit sisters were hanged here after being raped, a special court on Friday convicted four of the six accused in the case, a government advocate said.

    The POCSO (Protection of Children From Sexual Offences) court also said that a hearing on the sentence of the four convicts will be held on August 14, Special Public Prosecutor (SPP) Brijesh Pandey said. The incident took place on Sep 14, 2022, when the two minor Dalit sisters of a village in the Nighasan area here had been kidnapped and brutally murdered after gang rape.

    2-day meet to revitalize NCC in J-K, Ladakh begins in Jammu

    A two-day meet to revitalize the National Cadet Corps (NCC) in the Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh commenced here on Friday, a defence spokesman said.

    Uttar Pradesh: Woman, teen daughter die after consuming poison following dispute

    A woman and her daughter died allegedly after consuming some poisonous substance following a dispute here on Friday, police said.

    Circle Officer (CO) Dipanshi Rathore said an argument broke out between Basmati Devi (55) and her daughter Kajal Yadav (16) and in a fit of rage, the duo consumed some poisonous substances. The incident happened in Dalelganj village in Khalilabad area of the district when the other family members had gone to the farm for work, she said.

    Amid the shock and furore over the death of a young Jadavpur University student in a hostel allegedly because of ragging, West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose on Friday decided to form a high-level committee headed by a former chief justice and present interim VC of a university to study the issues and come up with suggestions to end the menace of ragging during an emergency meeting of teachers in-charge of anti-ragging squads of universities at Raj Bhavan.

    A Raj Bhavan statement said it has been also been decided to put an end to the entry of outsiders on university and college campuses which may lead to physical violence and intimidation of freshers.

    Ugandan man arrested with ingested cocaine capsules worth Rs 7.85 crore at Mumbai airport

    The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) arrested a Ugandan man, who allegedly ingested 65 capsules of cocaine worth Rs 7.85 crore, at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport here, an official said on Friday.

    Acting on a tip-off, DRI officials intercepted a Ugandan passenger suspected to be carrying drugs at airport on August 7, an official said. On interrogation, the passenger admitted to have ingested capsules containing cocaine to smuggle it into the country, he said.

    SP members stage walkout from UP Assembly over unemployment issue

    Members of the Samajwadi Party walked out of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly on Friday, the fifth day of the Monsoon session, over the issue of unemployment in the state.

    During the Question Hour in the Vidhan Sabha, the SP members had asked the Minister of Labour and Employment Anil Rajbhar about the major employment schemes being implemented by the Labour Department at present and the number of educated unemployed youth in the state.     China's plans to build a new embassy near the Tower of London have stalled following local opposition to what would be the biggest diplomatic compound in Britain.

    The borough of Tower Hamlets, the local government council in London responsible for the area, blocked the project in February, citing concerns about the increased risk of terror attacks, protests and traffic in an area visited by millions of tourists each year. Chinese authorities had until Thursday to appeal the decision to the UK government but did not, Tower Hamlets said.

    Congress, NCP welcome interim bail granted to former Maharashtra minister Nawab Malik

    The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and the Congress on Friday welcomed the interim bail granted to former Maharashtra minister Nawab Malik by the Supreme Court on medical grounds in a money laundering case.

    Malik, a senior NCP leader, was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in February 2022 in the case allegedly linked to the activities of fugitive underworld don Dawood Ibrahim and his associates. Party's national spokesperson Clyde Crasto thanked the apex court for granting interim bail for two months to the politician, saying the 64-year-old former minister can avail medical treatment for his multiple health issues during this period.

    Pakistani court cancels former PM Imran Khan's pre-arrest bail

    A Pakistani court on Friday cancelled the pre-arrest bail of former prime minister Imran Khan in seven terrorism cases, including an attack on a senior military officer's house here, following his failure to appear before the court since he is in jail after he was sentenced in a corruption case.

    Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief Khan has been lodged in Attock Jail since August 5 after he was sentenced to three years in a corruption case by a trial court in the Toshakhana corruption case.

    Pakistan's Supreme Court in a unanimous verdict on Friday struck down as null and void a recently enacted law modifying the review process of its judgements, dampening former premier Nawaz Sharif's hopes as he seeks to challenge his lifetime disqualification from holding any public office.
