    Winter vacation in Delhi schools has been reduced from 15 to six days and will begin from January 1, 2024, a circular from the Directorate of Education said on Wednesday. Winter vacation for the academic session 2023-24 was scheduled to take place from January 1 to January 15.

    Rupee rises 5 paise to close at 83.32 against US dollar

    The rupee appreciated 5 paise to close at 83.32 (provisional) against the US dollar on Wednesday, helped by a bullish trend in domestic equities and sustained foreign fund inflows.
    Forex traders said elevated American currency in the overseas markets and dollar buying by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) capped sharp gains for the local unit.

    Russian President Putin arrives in Abu Dhabi

    Russian President Vladimir Putin has arrived in Abu Dhabi, Russian state news agencies reported on Wednesday. Putin is visiting the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia on Wednesday in a rare trip abroad and will hold talks with Saudi Arabian Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to discuss oil, OPEC+ and the conflicts in Gaza and Ukraine.

    Air India rejigs 250-aircraft Airbus order

    Tata Group-owned Air India, which placed a 250-aircraft order with Airbus earlier this year, has rejigged the order, which will now have more number of A321neo aircraft, according to sources.
    As part of the 250 aircraft order with Airbus, the airline was to acquire 210 narrowbody A320 family planes, comprising 140 A320neo and 70 A321neo and remaining 40 widebody A350s, consisting of six A350-900 and 34 A350-1000s. Air India has tweaked the order with Airbus and will now acquire 140 A321neo and 70 A320neo, while the order for 40 A350s has also been rejigged, the source said.

    10 BJP MPs elected to state assemblies resign from Parliament

     Ten of the 12 BJP MPs elected to state assemblies in the recent elections resigned from Parliament on Wednesday, and the two others will also quit.
    The 10 who put in their papers include nine Lok Sabha MPs, including Union ministers Narendra Singh Tomar and Prahlad Patel, and the one Rajya Sabha member, officials said.

     DMK MP D N V Senthil Kumar on Wednesday apologised in the Lok Sabha for his controversial 'north-south divide' remark which had sparked a backlash.
    Kumar had on Tuesday used a pejorative to describe Hindi heartland states while attacking the ruling BJP. His comments led to ruckus and adjournment in the House, and were expunged by Speaker Om Birla later.

    Indian-origin novelist awarded Singapore's highest arts accolade

     Eighty-one-year-old Indian-origin writer Meira Chand was among the three Singaporeans conferred the Cultural Medallion, the city-state's most prestigious arts accolade, in recognition of their artistic excellence and contribution to enriching the country's arts and culture scene. Chand, fellow novelist Suchen Christine Lim and Malay dance veteran Osman Abdul Hamid received the award from President Tharman Shanmugaratnam at a ceremony held at the Istana on Tuesday, The Straits Times newspaper reported.

    Local train coach derails near Howrah junction in West Bengal

    One coach of a local train derailed near Howrah station in West Bengal on Wednesday morning, causing partial disruption in train services, a railway official said. No one was injured in the incident, he said. The fifth coach of the Bagnan-Howrah local derailed at 9.35 am between Tikiapara and Howrah stations when it was changing tracks, causing panic among passengers, the railway official said.

    Bus overturns in Jammu Kashmir's Rajouri; one dead, 22 injured

     A bus overturned in Rajouri district of Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday leaving one passenger dead and 22 others, including 14 students, injured, officials said. The accident took place near Radha Soami Ashram in Thandikassi village along the Rajouri-Jammu national highway.

    Kejriwal directs audit of Delhi Jal Board by CAG amid allegations of financial bungling

    The father of a key accused in the Mahadev betting app scam was discovered dead under suspicious circumstances in Chhattisgarh's Durg district.     Nepal court convicts 2 for their involvement in planting bomb on Indian train

    A Nepal court on Tuesday convicted two persons, including a suspected ISI agent, for their involvement in plotting a terror attack by planting a bomb in a train in India some seven years ago. The two are identified as Samsul Hoda and Brij Kishor Giri, according to Special Court’s spokesperson Dhan Bahadur Karki. The court gave the verdict in a case filed by the Money Laundering Department against the two Nepali nationals.

    Poland's former President Lech Walesa, 80, hospitalised with COVID-19

    Lech Walesa, Poland's 80-year-old former president and Nobel Peace Prize winner, has been hospitalised with a bad case of COVID-19, an aide said Tuesday. A post on Walesa's Facebook shows him on a hospital bed with an oxygen mask on, with a caption that says “I have been hit by Covid. ” The aide, Marek Kaczmar, told Polish media that Walesa is seriously ill, but under good care in a hospital in Gdansk, the Baltic port city where he lives. It's Walesa's second bout of COVID.

    SpiceJet flight diverted to Karachi due to medical emergency

    A SpiceJet plane flying from Ahmedabad to Dubai was diverted to Karachi's Jinnah International Airport due to a medical emergency on board, officials said here. They said the SpiceJet flight SG-15 made an emergency landing here around 9. 30 pm on Tuesday and a passenger was given medical assistance. "The Boeing 737 aircraft was going from Ahmedabad to Dubai when a 27-year old passenger, Dharwal Darmesh, suffered a suspected heart attack and needed medical attention," a spokesperson of the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) said here.
