Jaipur: Nearly 173 passengers and crew on the  Air India AI 890 flight from Guwahati to Delhi on Sunday evening escaped death when the plane, after being diverted to Jaipur, made a "blind landing" in fog  breaking one of its wings and one of its tyres burst.

The Director General of Civil Aviation has derostered the captain of the flight Jalaj Vats till further orders. The captain however says he averted another major disaster by asking the captain of an incoming SpiceJet flight minutes after the blind landing.

The Airbus A-320 plane had run short of fuel, after circling over Delhi and was diverted to Jaipur airport, which itself was enveloped in fog.

He had the choice of either making a ‘blind landing' at Jaipur airport in zero visibility conditions or crash-land in a field and Captain Jalaj Vats opted for the former.

The hero pilot also averted another major disaster moments after Jaipur blind landing.

Captain Jalaj Vats warned an incoming Spicejet flight that his AI plane was stuck on the runway in zero visibility and landing would result in a major disaster.

Captain Vats, who had by then been flying for more than 12 hours, visibility at Jaipur's Sanganer Airport was also zero and suspecting he may not have enough fuel for any more detours, he decided to land the plane using the Instrument Landing System, which helps with landing in low visibility.
