Tamil Nadu: Tamil icon Periyar's statue vandalised in Pudukkottai

Following the incident, a case has been registered against an unidentified person and an investigation is underway.

In yet another incident of vandalism, a statue of Dravidian stalwart EV Ramasamy, popularly known as Periyar, was damaged by an unidentified person in Tamil Nadu's Pudukkottai district today, news agency ANI reported. 

Following the incident, a case has been registered against an unidentified person and an investigation is underway.

"The police received information about it at 6:15 am on Tuesday after a local called the Deputy Commissioner's office on seeing the broken head. The police visited the spot and are looking into the incident. A large number of locals have also gathered at the site, " a policeman at the Alangudi DSP office told media.

The police are yet to register a case, the News Minute reported.  

When asked about the possibility of the miscreants being caught on camera, the police said that there was no CCTV footage yet. Further details are awaited.

Earlier this month, a statue of communist hero Lenin was razed in Tripura on March 5 sparking off a wave of similar actions across the country. 

A day later, in Vellore, following a controversial post by senior BJP leader from Tamil Nadu, H Raja, where he advocated the destruction of Periyar statues in the state, a BJP town secretary and some of his relatives stoned a statue of the anti-caste icon on March 6. Two people were arrested for the vandalism.
