Security forces today thwarted an infiltration bid by a group of Pakistani terrorists along the Line of Control in Gurez sector of Bandipora district in North Kashmir. Two of the infiltrators were killed by Indian security forces in the operation.

A group of five to six terrorists had attempted to infiltrate into the Indian side in the wee hours today, Army sources said. However, the prompt and appropriate response by security forces led to a gunfight in which two of them were killed.

Security forces have cordoned off the entire area along the LoC in the sector and a massive search operation is underway to nab the remaining terrorists. The exchange of fire is underway intermittently in the region.

Earlier this morning, Pakistan resorted to indiscriminate shelling and firing along the LoC in Bhimber Gali and Poonch sectors. According to a defence official, the Pakistani Army initiated the unprovoked firing at 6.45 am, using small arms, automatics and mortars.

“The Indian Army has retaliated strongly and effectively,” the official said.

The district administration in Rajouri has shut down 16 schools close to the LoC indefinitely. It has also ordered migration of the civilian population to safer places. This was after a soldier and a child were killed on Monday in Pakistani shelling on the LoC in Rajouri. In Uri sector too, a soldier and two civilians were injured in ceasefire violation by Pakistan on Monday.
