A boat carrying at least 40 people, well above its capacity, capsized in Ganga on Saturday near Patna, resulting in death of at least 24.

In a tragic accident, a boat carrying at least 40 people, well above its capacity, capsized in Ganga on Saturday near Patna, resulting in death of at least 24. 

Footage, shot before and after the accident, show the boat was carrying passengers well over its capacity. The visuals, accessed by India TV show, how some of the bystanders warned the passengers and boat operator of clearly visible over crowding. 

Visuals of moments just after the accident have also surfaced. The dramatic footage shows people swimming towards safety and few of them being been pulled into the waters along with the boat. 

The accident took place near NIT ghat last evening.

 

The revellers were returning to Ranighat in Patna from Sabalpur diara (riverine area) across the river after watching a kite festival on the occasion of 'Makar Sankranti'. 

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has announced an ex-gratia of Rs 4 lakh for the kins of victims while Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced Rs 2 lakh.
