A police constable was injured in a firing incident in Jammu’s Bikram Chowk, officials said on Monday. The official residence of the Director General of Police was fired upon, though it is not clear whether the constable accidentally shot himself or was fired at, they said.

"Constable Subash Chander from Noushera was injured in the firing incident at the DGP's official residence at Bikram Chowk here," a police officer said.

Chander was rushed to the GMC Hospital, where his condition is stated to be critical, he added.

"We cannot say whether it is a case of accidental fire or suicide. His rifle was lying close to him," the officer said.

According to the police officer, DGP Dilbagh Singh had not shifted to his official residence as yet. A case in this regard has been registered and the investigations have begun.
