New Delhi: The Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC) will start providing consultancy and training on setting up and running community radio stations across the country to meet the requirements of expertise in the sector.

At its 134th meeting here, the IIMC Executive Council approved 'in principle' a proposal for setting up of the facility, including purchase of equipment and hiring of expert manpower in providing consultancy and training on community radio.

Information and Broadcasting Secretary Ajay Mittal, who presided over the meeting, observed that several organisations in spite of having licences are unable to operate the same in the absence of expertise in content creation and technology, a statement here said.

IIMC has been successfully running its own community radio station titled 'Apna Radio' since September in 2005, its DG K G Suresh said.
