The suspension of toll collection across the country at National Highways in the wake of demonetisation has been extended till December 2 midnight.

"Toll suspension is extended till 2nd December midnight across all National Highways," Union Minister for Road Transport Nitin Gadkari tweeted.

This is the fourth time that the government has extended deadline for toll tax since the demonetisation move was announced. The earlier deadline was November 24 midnight.

The government, however, said that scrapped Rs 500 notes will be accepted at toll plazas on NHs from December 2 midnight to December 15.

The decision has been taken to ensure smooth traffic movement across all National Highways and provide relief to cash-starved people following currency ban decision, an official said.

Due to the cash crunch in the market following demonetisation, the government had decided not to collect toll at booths in the country to avoid any clashes.

The Union government had last week extended the suspension of tolls till November 24 midnight for all National Highways, as relief to commuters after Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 currency notes were rendered defunct by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Meanwhile, the deadline to use demonetised Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes to pay for public utilities will end today midnight.
