BSP supremo Maywati today said that the Yogi Adityanath government’s decision to add “Ramji” to name of Dr BR Ambedkar in official records in Uttar Pradesh is aimed at gaining cheap popularity.

Accusing BJP of enacting drama over Dr Ambedkar’s name, Mayawati asked whether the prime minister writes his name as Narendra ‘Damodardas’ Modi.

“Does the prime minister write his name as Narendra ‘Damodardas’ Modi?” Mayawati asked.

“This step is just for raking fake and cheap kind of popularity, while on the contrary Baba Saheb's followers are being inflicted with atrocities,” she added.

The Uttar Pradesh government has decided to insert "Ramji" as the middle name of DR BR Ambedkar in all official documents and records, both old and new, in the state.

Prior to this order, Dr Ambedkar's name was written as Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar in all official documents and records in the state.

The opposition parties have accused the Yogi government of dragging Ambedkar’s name into politics just to show people that it is pro-Dalit.
