Earthquake rattles Assam, tremors felt across West Bengal, Bihar

Tremors were felt for 25-30 seconds in Kolkata, Siliguri and West Bengal up to Katihar, Purnea, Araria, Kishanganj, Sahebganj in Bihar.

A magnitude 5.3 earthquake rattled Assam on Wednesday sending tremors as far as West Bengal and Bihar.  No report of any loss of life or damage to property has been received so far.  The earthquake's epicentre was two km north of Kokrajhar town in Assam and at a depth of 10 km, a report of the Central Seismological Observatory in Shillong said.

Tremors were felt for 25-30 seconds at about 10.20 am  in Kolkata, Siliguri and West Bengal up to Katihar, Purnea, Araria, Kishanganj, Sahebganj in Bihar. Sikkim, Nagaland, Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh also felt the tremors.

Earlier in the day, an earthquake measuring 4.6 on the Richter scale occurred in Jammu and Kashmir, a disaster management department official said. No damage to life or property was reported.

The moderate intensity quake was felt at 5.15 am and the epicentre was located 199 km north of Kargil town in the Ladakh region, he said.

A major quake measuring 7.6 had killed over 40,000 people on both sides of the Line of Control on October 8, 2005.
