Lok Sabha MP Asaduddin Owaisi decried the incident where an inmate of Tihar Jail was branded with Om symbol.

“Every day a more innovative way is developed to humiliate us. To brand someone like cattle is cruel, unusual & dehumanising. We are not chattel, we’re HUMAN. (Let’s not pretend there’s any other reason why Nabbir was branded with this specific symbol),” said Asaduddin Owaisi in his tweet.

A court in Delhi called for an enquiry on April 19 after it was found that an undertrial by the name Nabbir was found to have been branded by the symbol Om. The incident caused an outcry after it came to light in the media.

Media reports said that the jail superintendent himself branded the symbol on Nabbir’s back. The reports suggested that Nabbir went through the horrific ordeal after he complained to the jail superintendent that an induction coil inside the jail was not working properly. Nabbir was lodged jail number 4 inside Tihar Jai.

An inquiry committee has been set up by Tihar Jail authorities now.

AIG (Prisons) PRO said on Friday that the Jail authorities have taken cognizance of the incident and  have constituted a committee which will probe the matter. The PRO also said that Nabbir has been shifted to jail number 1 from jail number 4
