Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, on Thursday, said that as a result of India's diplomatic pressure, Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) founder Masood Azhar declared global terrorist.

"As a result of India's diplomatic pressure, Masood Azhar declared global terrorist. It is a big diplomatic win for the country," said Arun Jaitley in a press conference.

"Opposition parties should cooperate and see it as a victory for the country," he added.

"Terrorism shall not be tolerated and this declaration from the UN is noteworthy. Persistent measures taken by the MEA, under leadership of PM and his own visits have resulted in this," said Defence Minister, Nirmala Sitharaman in the same press conference.

On Wednesday, the UN committee listed Masood Azhar as being associated with al-Qaeda for "participating in the financing, planning, facilitating, preparing, or perpetrating of acts or activities by, in conjunction with, under the name of, on behalf of, or in support of", "supplying, selling or transferring arms and related material to", "recruiting for", "otherwise supporting acts or activities of", and "other acts or activities indicating association with" the JeM.

There was no mention of the Pulwama attack in Jammu and Kashmir, which was claimed by the JeM.

A UNSC designation will subject Masood Azhar to an assets freeze, travel ban and an arms embargo. An assets freeze under the sanctions committee requires that all states freeze without delay the funds and other financial assets or economic resources of designated individuals and entities.
