South Indian superstar Vijay starrer Sarkar, which is just a few days away from its release date, has hit the rocky path and is reeling under accusations of plagiarism. After an investigation, the South Indian Film Writers Association under veteran filmmaker Bhagyaraj recently announced that the film’s story was similar to Varun Rajendran’s Sengol. However, filmmaker AR Murugadoss has refused to acknowledge the claims and has hit out at Bhagyaraj for arriving at this conclusion without proper investigation.

AR Murugadoss told Behindwoods, “I think the investigation was one-sided. Bhagyaraj claims that my story is very similar to Sengol. Let me ask him, did he read my full-bound script of Sarkar? They claim to have read the full script but they only read the synopsis.” The director said he never submitted a bound script for the review. “Bhagyaraj should have read my full-script or seen my film which I offered to show him. But, he didn’t do either,” Murugadoss alleged, adding, “what did I do to deserve such a big punishment?”

AR Murugadoss claims that his film Sarkar, slated for November 6 release, is set in 2018. It is based on recent political developments, including the chief minister’s death. “In that case, how can a story that was written 11 years ago and my film which is based on current politics be the same?” he asked.

“In our state, the names of VIPs missing from the registered voters’ list. Or somebody casting illegal votes in VIP names is a very common thing,” Murugadoss reasoned. AR Murugadoss even cited the real-life examples of Sivaji Ganesan, Kamal Haasan and Bhagyaraj when they fell victim to voter fraud. He added that he was not ready for a compromise by paying a compensation to his accuser as suggested by Bhagyaraj. “Yes, I rejected it because I have truth on my side,” he said.

Well, the matter is now with the Madras High Court and the case will be heard on October 30. On the other hand, the censor board has cleared the film with a U/A certificate.
