Renowned film cinematographer W.B. Rao dies at Mumbai hospital

W.B Rao was known for his camera works in film Rangeela, Hum and Khuda Gawah.

Veteran cinematographer W.B. Rao, who is known for his works in hits like Rangeela, Hum and Khuda Gawah breathed his last on Tuesday. An official of Western Indian Cinematographer’s Association (WICA) confirmed the news. He died at the Bhartiya Arogya Nidhi Hospital, where he was admitted in the ICU, the official said. Filmmaker Sangeeth Sivan mourned his death.

"W.B. Rao, the much respected and revered cinematographer is no more. 'Hum', 'Khuda Gawah' and 'Rangeela' were my personal favourites," Sivan tweeted.

He died at the Bhartiya Arogya Nidhi Hospital, where he was admitted in the ICU, the official said.

Rao had been a part of the film industry for over four decades. He started his career in the late 19660s as an assistant cinematographer to filmmaker Vikram Bhatt’s father Pravin Bhatt. Rao was known for his smart use of lights and colours and was seated at a senior position in Western Indian Cinematographer’s Association (WICA). His career lasted for four decades, in which he worked with famous filmmakers like David Dhawan, Ram Gopal Varma and Dharmesh Darshan. He also worked with superstars Amitabh Bachchan, Salman Khan, Sanjeev Kumar and Juhi Chawla.

He even worked for films like "Raja Hindustani", "Judwaa", "Har Dil Jo Pyar Karega" and "Dhadkan".
