New Delhi: The demand for a Bharat Ratna to famous singer Mohammad Rafi has gained momentum with music lovers coming out in support of the legend being conferred with India's highest civilian honour.

On the occasion of Rafi's 35th death anniversary, DMS Aarohi, a voluntary non-profit entity, organised a musical concert -- 'Tum mujhe yun bhula na paoge': Melodious memories of Mohammed Rafi (Tribute) – at Islamic Cultural Centre, Delhi to mark the day.

The aim of the event was to make a strong pitch for the demand to confer Bharat Ratna to Rafi.

Lata Mangeshkar is the only Hindi film singer to have been awarded the Bharat Ratna so far, back in 2001.

Pankaj Mathur, organiser of the musical gala, said, “We appeal to the Government of India to consider this and confer Bharat Ratna on Rafi sahab as early as possible. He deserves this. This appeal is from all Rafi fans.”

Several top singers graced the three-hour long event with live performances.

Mauritius Parliament Apeaker Maya Hanoomanjee was also present on the occasion.
