Directed by Vetrimaaran and produced by Dhanush, Tamil movie ‘Visaranai’ has been picked up as India’s official entry to Oscars 2017 in the Foreign Language Film category. The movie has already won three National awards including the best Tamil movie.

Filmmaker Ketan Mehta who is the jury chairperson of Film Festival of India said that ‘Visaranai’ was selected among 29 movies.

A post from the official Twitter handle of Vetrimaaran’s banner Grassroot Film Company, read: “We’re on cloud9!!! ‘Visaranai’ has been chosen to represent India at the Oscars.”

Based on the novel “Lock Up” by auto-rickshaw driver-turned-writer M. Chandrakumar, the film is about organised crime within the police force. It also throws the spotlight on police brutality.

The movie traces the life of four migrant workers who land in a huge problem. The workers are accused for a crime they never committed and are picked up by police in Guntur. What follows is them being embroiled in a web of crime and politics. The four of them are later encountered by the police.

“Visaranai” features Dinesh, Samuthirakani, Ajay Ghosh and Kishore in the lead.

The film earned critical acclaim earlier last year when it had its world premiere at Venice International Film Festival. It also won National Film Awards.
