Goa election results 2022: BJP is all set to form the government in the coastal state after winning the elections. 3 independents, 2 candidates of the MGP who have also won, have extended support to the saffron party.

Goa election results 2022 live: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is all set retain Goa and form government in the coastal state. In the recently concluded assembly election, BJP has won 20 seats. The majority mark to form the government is 21. In addition to this, regional player MGP whose 2 candidates have also won and 3 independent candidates, have extended support to the saffron party. There are a total of 40 assembly seats in Goa. Congress on the other side won 11 seats, but far behind to be able in a position to stake claim to form government. BJP and Congress were in a tough contest this time that was also reflected in exit polls projections. However, at the end, it turned out to be a carnival for the BJP.     Independents, MGP extend support to BJP

    We've won 20 seats. MGP has also given us a letter of support. 3 independent MLAs have also supported us. So now we are 20+3+2 =25. There is a possibility that more candidates will join us. So we are forming the government in Goa, said BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis.

    Three couples set to enter Goa Assembly

    The new Goa Assembly will have three pairs of husband and wife among its 40 members. Vishwajit Rane, health minister in the outgoing BJP government, and his wife Diviya won comfortably on party tickets from Valpoi and Poriem Assembly seats, respectively.

    Vishwajit won by a margin of 8,085 votes, while Diviya outdid him by defeating her nearest rival by 13,943 votes.

    Congress' Michael Lobo won from his traditional assembly constituency Calangute, while wife Delilah won from Siolim, also on Congress ticket.

    BJP's Atanasio Monserratte won from Panaji, while his wife Jeniffer won from Taleigao on BJP ticket. But the Kandolkars were not so lucky, nor were the father-daughter duo of Churchill Alemao and Valanka.

    Kavita Kandolkar and her husband Kiran who contested from Thivim and Aldona assembly seats as Trinamool Congress candidates, lost.

    Kavita lost to sitting BJP MLA Nilkant Halarnkar and Kiran to Congress' Carlose Fereira.

    Two other TMC candidates -- Churchill Alemao who was contesting from Benaulim and his daughter Valanka who had stood from Navelim, also bit the dust.

    Result tally in North Goa

    Out of 19 seats in North Goa, 10 seats have been won by candidates of BJP, 6 seats have been won by Indian National Congress and one each by MGP,  Revolutionary Goans Party, and an Independent candidate, says Ajit Roy, North Goa collector.

    BJP takes meeting of party candidates ahead of counting of votes

    BJP leaders on Wednesday held a meeting of all party candidates in Goa ahead of counting of votes. The ruling party's Goa election in-charge Devendra Fadnavis, Goa desk in-charge C T Ravi, chief minister Pramod Sawant and Goa BJP chief Sadanand Shet Tanavade were present at the meeting.

    “The meeting was held to discuss the counting tomorrow. We have asked all winning candidates to gather at the party office at 4 pm tomorrow,” Ravi told reporters later.

    The BJP was confident of winning majority of seats and would not require support of other parties, he claimed.
