Delhi MCD Elections 2022 HIGHLIGHTS: Delhiites on Sunday (December 4) exercised their franchise to vote in the Municipal Corporation Elections (MCD) 2022 as the high-stakes battle in the national capital reached the penultimate phase to elect new ward councillors. While the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is hoping to wrest control of the civic body to establish complete rule over Delhi, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is hoping to win maximum wards to prepare a base for the next Delhi Assembly elections scheduled to be held in 2025. On the other hand, Congress is looking to regain its lost ground in the national capital city. The Election Commission has made tight security arrangements for MCD polls deploying 40,000 police personnel and 20,000 home guards. Apart from this,108 companies of paramilitary and state armed police forces have also been deployed. The polling was held from 8 am to 5:30 pm. As the election concludes, all eyes are on December 7 when the counting of votes will take place.

    While the turnout at 12.30 pm was 18 per cent, it rose to 30 per cent by 2.30 PM. Voting will conclude at 5.30 pm. The previous civic body polls in 2017 had recorded 53 per cent voting. The counting of votes will take place on December 7.

    "The polling till 2 pm is around 30 per cent for all 250 wards in Delhi. The process is going on smoothly in all the wards. No untoward incident has been reported so far," a senior official of the State Election Commission (SEC) said.

    There are 1,349 candidates in fray and over 1.45 crore electors are eligible to exercise their franchise in the elections.

    According to data shared by SEC officials, Delhi has 1,45,05,358 voters, of which 78,93,418 are men, 66,10,879 women and 1,061 are transgender people.

    Delhi State Election Commission writes to Delhi Congress President Anil Chaudhary regarding the deletion of his name from the electoral roll.

    "State Election Commission, Delhi has merely adopted Electoral Roll prepared by ECI for the conduct of elections to MCD and as such the State Election Commission Delhi has no jurisdiction to make any additions or deletions. You may like to take up the matter with CEO, Delhi," the State Election Commission said.

    Polling in all 250 MCD wards in Delhi concludes. The voting started at 8 am today. Till 4 pm, Delhi recorded 45 per cent voter turnout.

    Age is no deterrent: Centenarians cast vote with enthusiasm in MCD poll

    Accompanied by her daughter, 106-year-old Shanti Bala Vaidya reached a polling station in Bara Hindu Rao area in north Delhi to cast her vote in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) poll on Sunday morning. "She has not missed a single election since she started voting," her 40-year-old daughter Kamla said.

    Vaidya only understands Bengali but cannot talk.

    "The only word she utters is 'Maa'. She calls me Maa," Kamla, who is a dry fruit vendor, said.

    Police personnel deployed at Deputy Ganj polling station also helped Vaidya in casting her vote.

    Manoj Tiwari accuses Delhi govt of deleting over 400 BJP supporters names from voting list

    BJP leader Manoj Tiwari accused the Aam Aadmi Party-led Delhi government of deleting at least the names of 450 voters from the voter list Subash Mohalla.     Delhi deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia has attacked the BJP once again saying it did not do anything in the last 15 years.

    More than 13,000 polling stations set up across Delhi

    This will be the first civic election after the fresh delimitation exercise. Authorities have set up around 13,638 polling stations across Delhi for the exercise. There were 272 wards in Delhi and three corporations- NDMC, SDMC and EDMC- in Delhi from 2012-2022, before being reunified into an MCD that had formally come into existence on May 22. The erstwhile MCD, established in 1958, was trifurcated in 2012 during Sheila Dikshit's tenure as the chief minister.
