Assembly Elections 2023: Chhattisgarh reports 71 per cent voter turnout, Mizoram 77 per cent

Chhattisgarh and Mizoram Assembly Elections 2023: Voting for assembly polls in Chhattisgarh and Mizoram concluded on Tuesday. The results of the assembly polls will be declared on December 3.

Assembly Elections 2023: The voting in Chhattisgarh and Mizoram concluded on Tuesday. Chhattisgarh witnessed the first phase of voting amid some incidents of violence, whereas Mizoram saw peaceful polling. A provisional turnout of around 71 per cent was recorded in for 20 constituencies on Tuesday, voting for which was held in separate time slots, amid Naxalite violence and the call for boycott. Voting for 10 constituencies was held from 7 am to 3 pm in 10 seats and from 8 am to 5 pm in the rest 10 segments under a thick security blanket of police and paramilitary personnel in the Naxalite-hit Bastar division. On the other hand, the Mizoram assembly elections passed off peacefully on Tuesday with over 77 per cent of 8.57 lakh electors exercising their franchise, officials said. The voting percentage is likely to touch 80 as final reports are yet to come from far-flung districts, additional chief electoral officer H Lianzela said. According to the Election Commission data at 6 pm, 77.39 per cent voter turnout was recorded. In the 2018 state polls, the overall voter turnout was 81.61 per cent.

    Chhattisgarh polls: Women voters outnumber men in 16 out of 20 seats in first phase

    Women voters outnumbered men in 16 out of the 20 Assembly where polling is being held in the first phase in Chhattisgarh. According to officials, the total number of voters in the 20 constituencies is 40,78,681, comprising 19,93,937 men, 20,84,675 women and 69 third-gender persons. "In 16 seats, namely Mohla-Manpur, Bhanupratappur, Kanker, Keshkal, Kondagaon, Narayanpur, Dantewada, Bijapur, Konta, Rajnandgaon, Khujji, Pandariya, Kawardha, Bastar, Jagdalpur and Chitrakot, there are more women voters than men," a poll official said, as per PTI.

    Chhattisgarh polling: Naxals fire at DRG personnel, security forces retaliate

    Amid ongoing polling in Chhattisgarh, Naxals fired at DRG personnel deployed for the outer cordon in the state. According to Sukma Police, the incident occurred around 2 kilometres away from Banda polling station this morning. The security forces retaliated and the firing from the Naxals' side stopped after 10 minutes. All the jawans are safe and voting is underway, they added.

    Polling updates at 11 am

    Nearly 22.97 per cent voter turnout was recorded till 11 am in 20 constituencies during the first phase of Chhattisgarh assembly elections. Polling is being held under a thick security blanket of police and paramilitary personnel, who kept a tight vigil in the seats in the Naxalite-hit Bastar division. Meanwhile, around 26.43 per cent voter turnout was recorded till 11 am in Mizoram.

    After casting his vote, Bastar IG P Sundarraj said that polling is being held in 12 Assembly constituencies of the Bastar division. He further stated that adequate security arrangements have been made in all areas. "We have special security forces too.     Chhattisgarh Chief Minister and Congress leader Bhupesh Baghel said that Naxalism has retreated to a great extent owing to the work done by his government in the last five years.
