The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) today retained the Bhabua assembly seat in Kaimur district with its candidate Rinki Rani Pandey defeating her Congress rival Shambhu Singh Patel by about 16,000 votes.

The Bhabhua seat had fallen vacant after the death of Anand Bhushan Pandey of the BJP. Rinky Rani is widow of Anand Bhushan.

With Pandey's victory, the BJP has retained its seat in the Bihar Assembly.

This was the first electoral battle in the state since Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, who also heads the JD(U), walked out of the alliance with the RJD and the Congress and joined the BJP-led NDA last year.

The bypoll for Bhabhua Assembly seat was held on March 11 along with Jehanabad segment and Araria Lok Sabha seat. The constituency had recorded a voter turnout of 54.03 per cent.
