The street is among the Mumbai's most expensive areas and Malabar Hill's elevation provides it a commanding view along the entire stretch of Marine Drive, all the way to Nariman Point.

Developed at the turn of the last century, the hilltop area is home to much of Mumbai's old wealth, corporate bigwigs, business people and elite professionals. The Ruias of Essar group, Shapoorji Pallonji Mistry, single largest shareholder in Tata Group, Adi Godrej and Venugopal Dhoot reside on Malabar Hill.

The area is also famous for its Walkeshwar Temple, and Banganga Tank, attached to the temple, Mumbai's oldest surviving structure. Malabar hill has three best parks that Mumbai boasts of – Hanging Gardens, Kamala Nehru Park and Priyadarshini Park.

Nepean Sea Road is an upmarket neighbourhood near Malabar Hill in South Mumbai. The area is named after Sir Evan Nepean, 1st Baronet, a British politician and administrator, and the Governor of Bombay (1812–1819).

The street has a combined net worth of about $30 billion.
