Luxury cars are often the first love of successful people. It is their way of announcing to the world that they have arrived. Buying a car, be it luxury car or not, is often a tough decision and one of the most discussed topics.

Three German brands -- Mercedes, Audi and BWM -- are the most debated luxury cars, even among those who can’t afford it. There is, however, no thumb rule to ascertain which among the three brands is the best. All dish out excellent cars from their stables, with features that can make any ‘ordinary’ car owner jealous.

Mercedes-Benz, among the three, emerged as a clear winner

Nevertheless, one look at the buying pattern delivers a clear picture on how the rich and successful have made their choices.

Mercedes-Benz, among the three, emerged as a clear winner. The brand -- with a slogan "the best or nothing" -- sold 13,231 vehicles in the year 2016. Though the company witnessed a dip of 2 per cent in sales as compared to the year 2015, it was far ahead of its nearest competition BMW.

BMW or ‘Bavarian Motor Works’ outnumbered Audi to become the second most loved car in the luxury cars segment. It registered a growth of 14 per cent, the only brand among the ‘big three’ to witness growth during the period, and sold 7,861 cars.

Audi, branding four rings in its logo representing four car companies that came together to create Audi's predecessor company -- Auto Union -- slipped to number three. The car manufacturer sold 7,742 units in India in the year 2016, a dip of 31 per cent when compared to last year.
