South China Sea: Typhoon Doksuri downgraded to tropical storm status

After bringing heavy winds and rain that left over a million people without power in southern China, typhoon Doksuri weakened into a tropical storm late Friday night.

The storm flooded streets and toppled electric transmission towers in the province after making landfall in southern Fujian province on Friday morning, causing at least 400,000 people to be evacuated.

The state-backed Xiamen Evening News reported that more than a million households were without power.

China's state-owned broadcaster CCTV made the announcement at 11 p.m. on Friday that the typhoon had been downgraded to a tropical storm.

The public was urged to remain inside, and businesses and summer school classes had been ordered to cease operations.

50 minor injuries were reported by authorities in the city of Quanzhou on China's southern coast.
