How many countries in the world use Electronic Voting Machines? Check HERE

The use of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) has been widely prevalent in Indian politics since the 1990s, marking a big change from ballot papers. However, India is not the only country to use EVMs.

EVMs are used by over 25 countries worldwide, but it is used nationwide in very few countries. Most countries use EVMs in smaller territories or local-level elections.

Bhutan is one of the countries that uses EVMs in its elections nationwide. India had provided some EVMs to Bhutan in 2017.

Brazil started using EVMs to tackle longstanding fraud as ballot boxes earlier used to arrive in voting stations already stuffed with votes. This practice was started in 1996.

Venezuela also uses electronic voting systems for nationwide elections and this process began in 2004. It started using biometric authentication to activate the voting machine.

Japan, a country known for its technological advancements, also used EVMs in elections, but discontinued the practice from 2018 onwards.

Other countries use electronic voting that includes the use of internet. Estonia was the first country to introduce online voting in 2005.

Countries like Belgium, Bulgaria and the United Arab Emirates also use different forms of electronic voting. France allows e-voting in specific provincial elections.

Russia and Turkey are among other countries rolling out e-voting systems, while Norway and Mexico are allowing e-voting in this year’s elections for citizens living abroad.
