Hathras rape-murder case: An SC/ST court, on Thursday, acquitted three of the four accused in the 2020 Hathras rape and murder case. The court announced that out of the four accused, Sandeep, Ravi, Luv Kush and Ramu, only Sandeep has been held guilty of the crime.

Although the court dropped rape charges against all the accused, Sandeep has been awarded life imprisonment.

Meanwhile, after the court dropped rape charges against all the accused, the victim's lawyer expressed disappointment and said the family would soon move to the high court, challenging the lower court's decision.

Throwback to the Hathras horror

The significant development came nearly 2.5 years after the state witnessed one of the horrific crimes where a 19-year-old Dalit woman was allegedly raped by four upper-caste men in Hathras.

The victim was admitted to a district hospital and later shifted to Safdarjung hospital in Delhi. However, she succumbed to her injuries on September 29.

The victim was cremated in the night near her home. Her family had alleged that they were forced by the local police to hurriedly conduct her last rites.

This triggered a major spat between the Opposition parties and the Uttar Pradesh government. Several top leaders such as Congress MP Rahul Gandhi, and his sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra visited the victim's house.

Since then, the victim's family has been living under high security amid the threat of their lives.
