The State Election Commission (SEC) on Friday (June 23) told the Calcutta High Court that a total of 822 companies of central forces have been requisitioned for the July 8 panchayat polls in West Bengal.

On Wednesday, around 68 per cent voter turnout was recorded in the repolls held in 572 booths across the state amid tight security.
The West Bengal Panchayat election took place after a long legal battle in the Calcutta High Court and the Supreme Court by the ruling TMC and opposition parties.
The repolls in these booths were held following reports of widespread violence during the panchayat polls on Monday which had claimed at least 12 lives.
Following sporadic violence during the West Bengal panchayat elections on May 14, 568 booths in the state are undergoing repolling today.
Polling booths were mainly targeted during the violence after clashes broke out between Trinamool Congress supporters and opposition party workers. Crude bombs were also hurled near several polling stations.
Sporadic violence and clashes between opposing political groups marred the West Bengal panchayat polls on Monday.
West Bengal Panchayat Polls | Around 1,500 security personnel from Assam, Odisha, Sikkim and Andhra Pradesh are in the state to reinforce security arrangements for the polls.
The panchayat polls witnessed an acrimonious campaign with the opposition accusing the ruling TMC of unleashing a reign of terror during the nomination process for the polls.
The court's direction came after hearing the petitioners and respondents and taking stock of the deployment of armed forces on the polling day by the state government.
"Utter lies and rumours spread by TMC to distract from the violence it has unleashed on the Left Front cadres. We categorically deny any such understanding and remain opposed to both the BJP and TMC," Yechury tweeted.
The TMC had filed more nominations than the number of seats in all the three tiers.
The West Bengal State Election Commission on Thursday announced that the panchayat election in the state will be held on a single day on May 14.
Justice Subrata Talukdar even directed the SEC secretary to treat the nominations of the nine candidates as valid and said that no fuzziness would be accepted by the court over technicalities.
The Calcutta High Court on Friday set aside its earlier order and directed the State Election Commission to issue fresh extension for filing of nomination and polls in consultation with the state.
A bench of justices R K Agrawal and A M Sapre requested the Calcutta High Court to consider the matter tomorrow in accordance with the law.
Opposition parties—the BJP and the CPI(M) -- alleged that the State Election Commission (SEC) was forced by the ruling Trinamool Congress to cancel its previous order extending the deadline.
