In an unprecedented development in 61 years, India's Independence Day celebrations at the Attari-Wagah international border near here in Punjab on Saturday were held in the absence of spectators due to coronavirus pandemic, officials said.
Eateries and small traders here are feeling the pinch as the famous beating retreat ceremony at the Attari-Wagah border has been suspended due to the coronavirus scare, stemming the flow of tourists to the area. It has also hit the hotel and tourism industry in the holy city.
The Border Security Force (BSF) Friday said people would not be allowed to attend the daily retreat ceremony between India and Pakistan at the Attari-Wagah border in Punjab in view of the coronavirus outbreak. The precautionary measure will be effective from Saturday.
