UP by-elections 2022: According to a statement issued by the office of Uttar Pradesh's Chief Electoral Officer, 24.43 lakh people will exercise their voting rights in the by-polls.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said the BJP's "double engine government" -- dispensations of the same party at the Centre and in the state -- has secured "double victory" in the state under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The Hyderabad MP, reacting to BJP's victory in Samajwadi Party's two strongholds, said that the result clearly shows that Akhilesh's Party has neither the ability nor the capability to defeat the BJP.
The BJP held nine out of the eleven seats that are going to the polls while the Samajwadi Party (SP) had the Rampur seat and the Bahujan Samajwadi Party (BSP) held the Jalalpur seat.
In all, 24 BSP leaders have switched loyalties, including two-time former MLA Ravindra Molhu, present district president Rishi Pal Gautam, zonal coordinator Ashirwad Arya and Dharmender Singh, the president Gangoh Assembly constituency unit.
The papers filed by Suman Diwakar, a joint candidate of the RLD-SP from Aligarh's Iglas Assembly seat were rejected by the Returning Officer for lack of documents.
The candidate, Vijay Rajbhar, is the son of a vegetable vendor.
Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati on Monday completely broke ties with Akhilesh Yadav-led Samajwadi Party and announced to contest all elections alone.
