The C-60 commandos, an elite wing of the police, had recovered bodies of 26 Naxals during a search after the encounter and Teltumbde, one of the wanted accused in the Elgar Parishad-Maoist links case, was suspected to be among the dead.
The encounter took place near Mardintola village in the morning when naxals fired on a search team of the police.
The C-60 unit commandos of Maharashtra Police cracked down upon the Naxals in a camp near a village. Some weapons, substantial literature and other materials of daily need from the place have been recovered.
The probe comes in the backdrop of allegations that security forces killed "innocent villagers" by poisoning their meals.
