According to earlier estimates, the free travel service will benefit more than 41.8 lakh women passengers every day and would cost the state exchequer Rs 4,051.56 crore annually. However, the four state-run bus corporations in Karnataka collectively recorded a daily ridership of 50.57 lakh females.
The stage is set to roll out one of the five promises (Guarantees) made by Congress. Siddaramaiah will launch the Shakti scheme on June 11.
Free bus travel for women in state buses was also announced by the Rajasthan government earlier.
Announcing the launch of the scheme, Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, who also holds the labour department portfolio, distributed free bus passes to 100 construction workers.
Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Saturday flagged off 25 buses exclusively for women and senior citizens to travel within the city of Guwahati.
Bus rides for senior citizens and students might be made free too in the coming days, Kejriwal said on the app, which was launched by him ahead of the assembly polls here.
The chief minister had first hinted about the scheme in a public meeting on Saturday.The move, which is yet to be cleared by requisite authorities, will cost the Delhi government Rs. 700 crore this year, Arvind Kejriwal said.
