Justice(retd) Joseph was among the four senior judges of the apex court who staged an open revolt against justice Misra by convening an unprecedented press conference on January 12 to flag their concerns about preferential allocation of sensitive cases to judges low down on the top court's hierarchy.

Addressing the Dr Patangrao Kadam memorial lecture here Saturday, the CJI said that if an individual has the right to live he also has the right to die with dignity.  

Justice Gogoi is one of the four Supreme Court judges who had held an unprecedented press conference in January this year, raising concerns about the administration in the apex court, saying it was "not in order".

If the recommendation is cleared by the Central government, Justice Gogoi will be administered the oath of office by President Ram Nath Kovind on October 3.

Dipak Misra said that the judiciary should be strengthened so that the justice delivery system becomes fast, qualitatively responsive and serves the purpose of justice.

"Judges of this court are also making contribution for the flood relief fund," the bench said. The observation came after Attorney General K K Venugopal referred to the "grave tragedy" that has struck Kerala rendering 10 million people homeless.

"There may be some elements who try to weaken the institution, but the judiciary will refuse to succumb," the CJI said.

The bench, headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra, observed that an environment has been created in the Indian society over the years that has led to deep-rooted discrimination against the community.

The vice president cut short his visit to Hyderabad and reached here to hold deliberations over the notice given by the seven opposition parties.  

Besides the Congress, those who signed the motion include members of the Samajwadi Party, BSP, CPI-M, CPI, NCP and IUML. Nominated member K.T.S. Tulsi also signed.

This comes after a delegation of political parties met with Rajya Sabha chairman Venkaiah Naidu at his residence and submitted a petition with 71 signatures elaborating their charges against the CJI.

There has been an opinion among some opposition parties that key issues raised by the four senior-most judges concerning the functioning of Supreme Court have not been addressed.
