The high pitched campaign for the by-election in Odishas Bijepur Assembly seat in Bargarh district came to an end on Saturday evening. The by-election in Bijepur was necessitated as chief minister Naveen Patnaik resigned from the seat. Patnaik had won from two seats - Hinjili in Ganjam district and Bijepur in Bargarh district in the Assembly election. The BJD president retained Hinjili seat and resigned from Bijepur assembly segment.
Campaigning for the bypolls to 11 assembly seats in the politically crucial Uttar Pradesh came to an end on Saturday evening, with political parties making a last-minute effort to reach out to voters in the polls seen as a litmus test for the Yogi Adityanath government which has completed 30 months in office.
The upcoming assembly by-elections could give a major jolt to opposition parties in Uttar Pradesh because the BJP is, once again, focusing on OBC and Dalit candidates and, thereby, making a severe dent in the Samajwadi Party and Bahujan Samaj Party vote base.
JD(S) patriarch H D Deve Gowda on Wednesday said his party would field candidates in all the 15 constituencies for the December 5bypolls, following the Supreme Court's decision on the status of disqualified Congress-JD(S) legislators.

Nationalist Congress Party's MC Kappan has won Pala by-election. Kappen, leader of the Nationalist Congress Party, defeated Pulikkunel, a faction leader of the Kerala Congress (M) by 2,943 votes.
As per the early trends, Devti Karma of the Congress was leading by a margin of 2,778 votes against her nearest rival Ojaswi Mandavi of the BJP, he said.
In Vattiyoorkavu in Thiruvananthapuram, Mayor V K Prasanth will be the CPI(M)-LDF candidate, while Advocate Manu Roy is the LDF supported Independent candidate in Ernakulam assembly consitituency, CPI(M) State Secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan, said releasing the list.
Election Commission of India announces by-polls for two Rajya Sabha seats, one each from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar on Thursday. The by-polls will be conducted on October 16.
Counting of votes will take place on Friday.
"At 11 a.m, 24.14 per cent votes have been cast. Till now, there are no untoward incidents in the constituency. Polling is going on smoothly," an Election Commission official from Kottayam district.
A massive security blanket of around 18,000 personnel, including those from paramilitary forces, and drones have been thrown around the Dantewada Assembly segment, which is part of the insurgency-hit Bastar region, for conducting peaceful polling, a police official said.
The bypoll for the ST constituency was necessitated following the death of BJP legislator Bhima Mandavi in a naxal attack in April this year.
The by-elections will be held in Arunachal Pradesh, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Assam, Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Meghalaya, Odisha, Puducherry, Punjab, Rajasthan, Sikkim, Tamil Nadu, Telangana and Uttar Pradesh, Chief Election Commissioner Sunil Arora told the media.
The election will be held on September 23 and the counting will take place on the same evening. The notification for the bypolls will be issued on September 5, the Election Commission said.
State AAP chief and Sangrur MP Bhagwant Mann said the core committee had also formed panels for the preparations and selection of candidates. Phagwara and Jalalabad seats had fallen vacant after sitting MLAs Som Parkash and Sukhbir Badal were elected to the Lok Sabha from Hoshiarpur and Ferozepur, respectively.
State ministers Saurabh Patel, Pradeepsinh Jadeja and BJP MLA Arunsinh Rana were among the first few to cast their votes.
