In an apparent reference to Pakistan, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Thursday said that SAARC has problems, and that BIMSTEC leaders were invited for swearing-in of Prime Minister Narendra Modi last month because there is energy, mindset and possibility in latter's regional grouping which fits in with Indias very optimistic vision of economic cooperation.

BIMSTEC stands for Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation. It has member states from South and Southeast Asia. Leaders of BIMSTEC nations have been invited for PM Narendra Modi's swearing-in ceremony on May 30.

The BIMSTEC armies, showcased tactical drills like hostage rescue by insertion of troops from helicopters, room intervention as well as house clearing drills.
The proposal for the joint military drill was first forwarded by the Indian Army in June, followed by an initial meeting of BIMSTEC senior army officials in New Delhi.
The BIMSTEC is a regional grouping comprising Bangladesh, India, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Bhutan and Nepal.
Speaking at the inaugural session of BIMSTEC summit, PM Modi expressed India’s willingness to work with the member states for enhancing regional connectivity in the region.
The two leaders met in the Nepalese capital, Kathmandu, on the sidelines of the 4th Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) Summit.
Over a period of time, however, diplomacy and economic cooperation have replaced guns and bullets as weapons of war. Using these tools, both India and China are trying to increase their influence in Asia.
India today slammed Pakistan’s "hugely damaging" approach of "blocking" every possible regional initiative in SAARC, saying it will force countries of the region to look for other options like BIMSTEC.
